ASCB is an inclusive, international community of biologists studying the cell, the fundamental unit of life. Pharmaceutical microbiology is concerned with the study of microorganisms associated with the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The branch of science which deals with the study of origin of new from old i.e. origin, variation, inter-relationship between organisms of past and present days. Our undergraduate students thrive in an atmosphere that promotes exploration and collaboration across all areas of research and study.
Biology is the science of life. Previously a supplement to Proceedings B, and launched as an independent journal in 2005, Biology Letters is a primarily online, peer-reviewed journal that publishes short, high-quality articles, reviews and opinion pieces from across the biological sciences. Nearly all courses offered by the department include a laboratory or field-based component where students can design and perform their own experiments.
Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Students who study the biological sciences will be able to pursue many career avenues particularly within research, teaching, sales and in field work roles. Evolution is the change over time that is the engine of biological diversity. Whatever the initial tension between the two disciplines, newer methods and critical insights made their way into evolutionary biology leading to a new area of research traveling under the new banner of molecular evolution.
It began to dominate the study of evolution, posing a series of challenges to the synthetic theory of evolution, and culminating with the views of Japanese geneticist Motoo Kimura (1924-94) and others who argued that the vast majority of variation seen at the molecular level was due to random genetic drift and mutation and not to natural selection, which acted merely in a negative or eliminative role.
Physiology is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical processes of living organisms function as a whole. Cell Theory: There are three parts to cell theory — the cell is the basic unit of life, all living things are composed of cells, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells. In addition to subject-specific skills, biology graduates develop valuable transferable skills such as data analysis, communication, teamwork and time management.
15. Exobiology: It is the branch of scientific inquiry dealing with the possibility of life in the outer space. Biology graduates have a deep knowledge of biology and biological processes. Most universities will offer degree programmes in the biological sciences and will also offer a joint degree programme with other sciences or the social sciences. There are also opportunities for biology graduates within the legal sector, where specialized scientific knowledge may be required.
